The ELCA candidacy manual requires students seeking ordination as a pastor to complete 2000 hours of internship. This is typically accomplished in a 12 month, full-time internship that usually begins in August or September.
The ELCA candidacy manual requires students seeking ordination as a deacon to complete 1000 hours of internship. There is no 'typical' deacon student internship. It can be accomplished in a congregation alone; or with a primary setting in a non-profit or other setting, combined with a smaller number of hours per month in a congregation.

Financial Agreement
Internship sites pay a one-time fee of $1500 to PLTS (current amount for 2024-25, subject to change in future years) and a monthly stipend of $2,000 (current amount for 2024-25, subject to change in future years) to the intern. Housing and utilities are to be provided, unless the site is designated for a geographically-restricted student.
